Challenge
EDF sought to deploy its first urban microgrid—a 20 MWh standalone BESS—in a dense Tel Aviv neighborhood.
The system needed to:
- Provide 24+ hours of backup power to a major academic faculty
- Alleviate urban grid congestion
- Enable energy arbitrage in Israel’s complex tariff landscape
- Strict urban fire safety, regulatory hurdles, and evolving project requirements added complexity.
Contel Smart Energy Role
Contel delivered a full-stack control solution, including:
- Energy Management System (EMS): Smart scheduling & SoC optimization
- SCADA: Real-time visibility, CATL BESS integration, Intuitive dashboards with weather, and alarm systems
- Cybersecurity layer: Secured API links to EDF trading desk and grid operator
- Custom features: One-click backup mode, calendar-based operations (weekends, holidays, peak rates)
Contel acted as an agile partner, supporting EDF across design, commissioning, and remote operations.
Results
- Remote O&M-ready: EDF and third-party teams operate via Contel platform, Energynie
- Fast-track build, despite tight urban constraints
- 24/7 NOC support with rapid incident response
- Future-ready: Built-in flexibility for future PV integration and new grid services
Conclusion
This flagship project proves that city-scale energy resilience is viable today—with the right
mix of smart controls, modular tech, and agile collaboration.
